Because a venue for the June 6 hackathon has just been decided and because the City of Appleton did an official press release about the event, it seemed appropriate to publish that info now. Today's post was going to be about the Open Water and Open Air initiatives, but I'll do that post tomorrow instead.
The venue for the DHMN Civic Hackathon/Appleton 2015 will be Lawrence University, in the Esch Hurvis Room of the Warch Campus Center. It was the only facility we could find in the city of Appleton that had room for 100 civic hackers, is able to provide robust wifi, and was available for our use on June 6, 2015.
Here's what Chad Doran, Communication Coordinator for the City of Appleton, wrote in the press release for the "DHMN Civic Hackathon/Appleton 2015":
City of Appleton to host first Civic Hackathon
May 8, 2015 – On June 6, a gathering of hackers will attempt to use City of Appleton public information…for a good cause.
The City is hosting its first civic hackathon at Lawrence University’s Warch Campus Center. A civic hackathon brings computer programmers, coders and anyone else with a passion for the community together, to help the community tackle local challenges by adapting existing solutions or creating new ones. The event in Appleton coincides with the National Day of Civic Hacking in which thousands of people will participate in civic hackathons in cities across the country.
Mayor Tim Hanna says the event will showcase the wealth of tech talent in the area and make a statement about a growing industry in the City.
“This event really puts Appleton out there showing that we have this wealth of tech talent and that they are willing to work on projects to help our community.”
To participate here locally, all you need to do is show up. You don’t need to be a techie or have any computer experience at all. You can work individually or with a group and contribute as you see fit.
The all-day Appleton event will begin at 9 a.m. in the Esch Huvis Room in the Warch Campus Center at Lawrence University. Participants can come and go as they please throughout the day. Wifi and hardwired internet access will be provided.
Registration and participation for the event are free. To sign up visit:
